Public Realm

Join us on December 6th from 10am – 12 pm as we kick off a new year of the Public Realm Initiative Council. Staff from the City of Orange will lead us on a tour of the Orange Circle, Old Town Orange and Chapman University. As a group we will dialogue on the opportunities and challenges of managing the a public realm and how the City’s public realm has shaped the City’s strategy for economic development.

Public Realm

In the United States public space is at risk. We spend most of our time in our private automobiles, in private buildings, reliant on good and services that have been privatized. The public spaces and infrastructure we have built receive inadequate public funding resulting in their deterioration leading to further withdrawal from the public realm by the necessary people to active space.

Can we sustain a robust democracy without sustaining a robust public realm? Can we sustain a robust economic expansion If the public realm is avoided resulting in less informal interactions among people that result in less exchanging of ideas required for innovation? Can we have a just society if diverse people are not able to rub shoulders in the public realm?

The ULI is seeking new members for the Orange County/Inland Empire’s Public Realm Initiative Council (PRIC). The mission of the PRIC is to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the public realm. The goal is to share best practices that will lead to cities and neighborhoods promoting:

  • Spatial equality
  • Social connectivity
  • Cultural diversity
  • Safety
  • Economic growth
  • Fiscal stability
  • Environmental sustainability

We are looking for people with a passion for the public realm. Those who think critically and are prepared to further the dialogue for improving the public realm in Orange County and the Inland Empire. Thought leaders who want to engage with other thought leaders.
