YLG Giveback Holiday Happy Hour Recap
We hosted our first ever Giveback Holiday Happy Hour, and with 30+ attendees we raised over $2,000 for the Thomas House Family Shelter.
Last Friday, the OCIE staff embarked on an extraordinary journey to Catalina Island, a picturesque gem off the coast of Southern California, with fifteen amazing members. We boarded the Catalina Flyer at the crack of dawn, and the journey over set the stage for the day, with dolphins playing in our wake and in the water all around, and several migrating whales making their presence known.
Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Jeff Stevens, the Senior Director of Planning at the Catalina Island Company, who whisked us away on a journey through time and space aboard a meticulously restored 1953 flexbus. Jeff’s passion for the island and its rich history was infectious, as he regaled us with island information and the ambitious projects undertaken by the Catalina Island Company.
Our first stop, El Rancho Escondido, was a true testament to Catalina’s natural beauty. With majestic Arabian horses, one of whom graciously entertained us with a stunning performance, we were transported to a realm of tranquility and wonder. Joined by Hunter Rusack, Vice President of Operations at the Catalina Island Company, we ascended to the chapel, where panoramic views of Little Harbor unfolded before our eyes, accompanied by fascinating insights into the island’s heritage.
We headed next to lunch at the Airport in the Sky Restaurant, where we savored both the gourmet cuisine and the breathtaking vistas that stretched out before us.
We descended back towards town, guided by Lauren Dennhardt, the Senior Director of Conservation at the Catalina Island Conservancy, while learning about the flora and fauna on the island. Amidst verdant landscapes and pristine wilderness, Lauren illuminated the vital efforts underway to preserve Catalina’s ecological treasures, offering us glimpses of island inhabitants, including the elusive island fox and majestic bald eagle. We did not see any bison, which just means we will have to come back again soon!
No visit to Catalina would be complete without a rendezvous with its iconic landmarks. At the Chimes Tower, we delved into the intricacies of its history and maintenance, standing in awe as the melodious chimes serenaded us at precisely 1:45, albeit a little loud!
The grand finale of our excursion brought us to the majestic Catalina Casino, a symbol of Avalon’s glamour and grandeur. Exploring its ornate interiors and panoramic vistas, we marveled at the architectural splendor that graced this island oasis. We had just enough time to stop into a local restaurant before heading back to the ferry, where we commiserated about having to head home!
A huge thank you to Jeff, Hunter, Lauren, our bus driver Ron, and the Catalina Island Company for making this amazing day possible, and to our wonderful members who spent an entire Friday with us!
